ISSUE 02 • Michelle Reynoso

Michelle ReynosoMICHELLE REYNOSO lives in New Jersey with her husband and son. Writing has been a part of her life since childhood. Her earliest writing memory is from the first grade when she co-wrote a holiday play about Santa and his workshop. She even had a cameo appearance as Mrs. Claus in the production. In 1984 Michelle earned the Future Author Award, which proved to be the first writing milestone in her career. Later in life, she earned her BFA in theater from New York University.

“My time at NYU was both exhilarating and scary. I loved the idea of moving to a place where you could redefine yourself and be whatever you wanted to be,” Michelle says.

After college, Michelle delved into the world of business. It was there that her technical writing developed, creating marketing collateral, press releases, analytical presentations, and company bid proposals. With a busy full time work schedule, and juggling responsibilities as a mother and wife, Michelle managed to carve out time to devote to her creative writing. Her first book, Do You?, a collection of original poems & photographs, earned her accolades from both the Writers’ Digest International Self-Published Book Awards and the New York Book Festival. Her work has also been published in NH Troubadour and The Raymond Voice. Michelle is currently at work on a sci-fi based young adult novel.

About my poetry: “Poetry captures life, concentrated into its essence; the beauty, grit, and raw evoked emotions of everything around me. That is what inspires my poetry – the essence of things. And to get to that, a connection with the emotions of what I’m trying to capture is essential. I look to nature, people, events; anything that evokes strong emotional connections. I engulf myself in it, and then try to capture it in words and rhythm. I wrote a poem a few years back about gorillas. I spent hours watching them through the glass at the zoo. And then I spent hours watching the people watching the gorillas. It was something that changed my life, and I captured that moment in one of my favorite poems. The setting inspired me. The subjects inspired me. And my emotional connection inspired me. And I’ll forever have that moment captured, preserved in words.”

Dying, On the Snow

Cloven hoof prints in the snow
going to and fro
searching
lurching
dying on the snow.

Red
as you bled
your body convulsing
the white snow emulsing
making a morbid snow angel.

A senseless death
a fawn, now bereft
wild eyed and flighty
she nudges the body once mighty
mom’s lifeless form settles into the snow.
